Sports Dentistry
Sports Dentistry is the treatment and prevention of oral/facial injuries that occur during athletic activities. Prevention and adequate preparation are the key elements in minimizing injuries that occur in sports – from proper Nutritional Counseling for the active athlete, to the Fabrication of custom athletic mouthpieces, to, if necessary, immediate trauma treatment.
Got Teeth? Keep it that way! Whatever your age or sport, mouth guards are an important part of sports safety. Patients at Tocci Dental Associates benefit from Dr. Tocci’s athletic background, his years coaching youth sports, and experience in sports dentistry. As a service for our patients of record, Dr. Tocci offers state-of-the-art custom mouth guards for patients engaged in contact sports.
While mouth guards are not mandatory equipment in all sports, their worth is indisputable. Dentists see more injuries to the mouth as a result of playing sports than from almost any other single cause. The American Dental Association estimates that over 2 million teeth are knocked out from sports-related trauma each year! Wearing a mouth guard can prevent serious injury and save a lot of pain.
- Half of all children will suffer a traumatic injury to a tooth by the time they graduate high school
- Sports activities cause the greatest percentage of traumatic oral and concussive injuries
- Sports related injuries accounted for three times more facial/dental injuries than violence or traffic accidents and six times more than work related accidents!
- Findings show that soccer players are more likely than football and hockey players to sustain an orofacial injury and only 7% of soccer participants wear mouth guards
- In basketball, a player's risk is twice that of a football and hockey player and yet only 7% of basketball players wear mouth guards. Basketball players who do not wear mouth guards have a seven-fold increase in chances of orofacial injury.
- With the increase in women's sports participation, sports related orofacial injuries to girls and women is on a steep increase.
The American Dental Association recommends wearing custom mouthguards for the following sports: acrobatics, basketball, boxing, field hockey, football, gymnastics, handball, ice hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, roller hockey, rugby, shot putting, skateboarding, skiing, skydiving, soccer, squash, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, and wrestling.
